HoanBlue is a Bluetech and Blue Economy development company established with the aim of unlocking the potential of sea-land opportunities in coastal communities in Somalia for inclusive and sustainable economic growth with a positive employment impact. This can be achieved whilst conserving and sustainably developing the coastal and marine environment.
Our primary aim is in accelerating inclusive and sustainable economic coastal growth in Somalia with job creation and employment impact, targeted particularly towards women and young people. We can achieve this by promoting the adoption of bio-intensive mariculture practices such as seaweed farming along Jazeera beach in Mogadishu, Somalia.
More than 3 billion people worldwide rely on the ocean for their livelihood. Keeping the oceans clean and healthy is therefore crucial for sustainable development and reducing poverty.
There is much opportunity for business and investment to ensure both a healthy ocean and a healthy economy. HoanBlue represents an estimated global gross marine product (GMP) of nearly €2.5 trillion a year, with the overall value of ocean assets estimated at €22.7 trillion.
By opening up innovative Blue Empowerment approaches, HoanBlue will directly and sustainably engage 10,000 women and youth sea farmers in a span of 5 years.
Somalia boasts of one of the longest and richest coastline in Africa. Robust Blue development of the Somalia’s coastline will enhance job creation, improved food security, income generation, rapid economic growth, skills and community development and diversification of livelihoods.
Sustained marine aquaculture development plays keystone role in marine ecosystem engineering and conservation. Marine macroalgae (kelps and seaweeds) play an important role in coastal carbon cycling and have been identified as significant carbon sinks thus intensive adoption of seaweed farming has humongous contribution to ocean conservation and climate change mitigation.
Through ecosystem engineering and nutrient cycling, sustained marine aquaculture development contributes to marine increased marine species richness and biodiversity.
Blue empowerment project’s are embedded in circularity framework thus enhancing sustainable production.
Training and capacity-building programs for local communities and workers involved in sea farming i.e seaweed farming. These programs are for enhance skills and knowledge related to sustainable farming practices.
